Herman Brothers Pond Management - Central Illinois Pond and Fish Experts

May 2008
  • Saturday, May 3 - We had the Illinois Smallmouth Alliance out to our smallmouth lake today for some fishing and handfeeding the smallmouths. The weather was 54 degrees with 30 MPH sustained winds and a 34 degree windchill. The waves were so big, just standing on the dock was not easy. Anyhow, those guys are crazy! They put their waders on and went out fishing.
With the cold front pushing through, the fish were very hard to catch, but those guys were pretty good at their favorite hobby and managed to get a few fish. Altogether they caught 11 Hybrid Striped Bass, 9 Largemouth, 4 smallmouth, 4 walleye, and a bluegill. Probably the worst fishing conditions possible, and I didnt figure they would catch anything. It was so windy, it was near impossible to take a photo. The highlight of the trip was when a member got stuck in the mud and just kept sinking the more he wiggled. We did manage some good video footage that will probably be circulating the internet shortly. His rubber boot is still stuck in the mud. The trained smallmouth at the dock were even reluctant to eat live minnows, but a few members were able to feed them right from their hands.

  • May - We have had to turn down several guided fishing trips this month due to being overbooked with lake work and fish stocking. We stocked over 1.1 million fish so far and still have about 15,000 left to go. We have somehow been able to squeeze in quite a few "mini" fishing trips and have been catching more and bigger fish than ever this month. Trophy Smallmouth, Jumbo Perch, Huge Crappies, and lots of Walleye!
