Chad & Julie Herman

Chad and Julie first met in 2007 and we were married less than a year later, in 2008. It took me awhile to find the perfect woman, but when I finally did, we didn’t waste any time getting married. We love the Lord; His grace in our lives motivates how we live and spend our time as a family. We have 3 little redheaded daughters, Livie, Emma, and Mercy who keep us busy in our daily lives as we aim to parent them well.

We designed and built our own home in 2012 and would do it again someday if we ever get the opportunity! Working on our own projects together as a family on nights and weekends is really rewarding and actually kind of becoming a hobby. Outside of daily life and work, we love to get our girls outside, dream about the future, travel, find ways to break up the routine, and spend time with family and friends sitting around a campfire.

Chad & Julie Herman Family

I’m the oldest sibling of the family. The responsible one :). I grew up loving the outdoors and spending most of my free time playing sports, fishing, hunting, and camping. I love people and have been richly blessed with awesome friends and family that I enjoy living life with. I met my wife, Julie, in my late 20’s at a prayer meeting and we share the same joy and passion of spending our time enjoying God and His creation to the utmost. I am the vice president of NHS Builders where I specialize in designing clients' dream homes. Creating and developing projects is in my DNA, I am a 4th generation contractor!

What is your name? Chad Herman
What is your role in the family business’? Owner at Noah Herman Sons Builders. Not so silent partner at Herman Brothers Lake and Land Management. Manager at The Giant Goose Ranch
What is your favorite childhood memory? Fishing with my Dad
What is your most embarrassing moment? Playing Flag Football at Family Thanksgiving and accidentally ripping off my Aunt Karen’s shirt as she ran by for a touchdown and her not knowing it until she turned around and spiked the ball in celebration in the end zone...Funny and embarrassed for her.
What is your favorite memory from filming the tv show? Cold water plunge from the wives...It's amazing what a shopping spree can accomplish.
How do you feel about filming a tv show about your family? I’m Scared :)
What is your favorite hobby? Whitetail Deer Hunting with a Bow
What are some things viewers might be surprised to learn about you? I love to read and learn. My mind is always going, always trying to figure things out. I think it kind of runs in the Herman Blood, because the family always seems to have some new idea dreamed up to attempt.
Funny Quote or Funny Memory: My mom playing an April Fools joke on us by saying we had won the Readers Digest Prize Money (Nate was always filling out these contest forms). Watching everyone celebrate for ½ hour before she told us "April Fools" was hilarious. Nate kept saying, "I knew it" over and over again.

Julie Herman

Julie Herman

I was born in Central Illinois and raised in Lexington, Kentucky. I was more of the studious, introverted type growing up...one of those crazy kids who loved school, my group of friends, competitive year-round swimming, and being indoors. So, how I married into one of the most "outdoor-loving families" around is still a mystery! After High School, I studied Kinesiology at the University of Illinois and then went on to the University of Indianapolis to get a Masters in Occupational Therapy. Occupational Therapy and family are what eventually brought me back to Central Illinois. Within a year of living in Peoria, I met Chad at a prayer group, and our common love for the Lord trumped all our differing hobbies and interests :). So much so, that we were married less than a year later. I now am a stay-at-home mom to 3 little girls and have recently begun the journey of homeschooling. While I still love the indoors...I'm growing in embracing the great outdoors with Chad by my side and the girls at my feet!

What is your name? Julie Herman
What is your role in the family business’? To support Chad as much as I can.
What is your favorite childhood memory? Visiting my cousins and grandparents in central Illinois over Summer and Christmas breaks.
What is your most embarrassing moment? I strongly dislike this question because I can never think of one particular moment! This was embarrassing though...before Chad and I were together, I showed up at a Herman volleyball game night not quite knowing what I was getting into. I had just moved to the area for work and was simply looking for a way to get to know people. Little did I know I'd be thrown into a very competitive game of volleyball playing among the best in the family! Did I mention that I can't play volleyball? Yeah, I think everyone thought I was there to "get to know Chad" since I clearly couldn't play. Well, truth be known, I was just in desperate need of friends! In spite of all that, Chad, in his graciousness, befriended me, and later asked me to be his wife. So thankful that he saw past my volleyball skills ;).
What is your favorite memory from filming the tv show? Jumping in the cold lake with all my sister-in-laws. Not that I'd want to do it again...ha...but looking back it was fun.
How do you feel about filming a tv show about your family? So far it feels kind of like expecting a baby. You know? So much time, effort, joy, and pain has gone into it. And in the end, you know it's going to resemble your family. But until it's all said and done, it's kind of like this exciting mystery. I'm excited to meet this not-so-little "Lake Life" baby.
What is your favorite hobby? Before kids...running and working out. Yeah, I used to get up at 4:45am EVERYDAY to get my run in. After kids...anything related to "home". I'm such a home-body. I love any excuse to stay home and love finding new ways to manage our home better. I love organizing (yes, I'm weird), trying new recipes, decorating, having people in. I love "home".
What are some things viewers might be surprised to learn about you? Though I'm quiet, I do have lots of opinions. I'm a city girl at heart. The first fish I ever caught was with the Hermans. Oh, and I once thought hunting was just a nice hobby guys did a couple times a year. Not a 4-month annual OBSESSION. See? This great outdoors stuff is still new to me! But I'm learning ;). And someday, I'm going to be the wife who loves deer hunting with her husband. Just give me some time...like when my baby girls can fend for themselves.

As far as her loves, here's her running list: spending time with her dad, all things beautiful and little..including shells and frogs, music, roller skating, riding her bike, crafting, and pretty much any activity where she can use her hands. Mercy Herman

Mercy Herman

Mercy was our sweet baby girl until she turned 1. Now she's our sweet "big" girl. Yep, she knows she's big stuff. Just ask her. She'll give you the biggest head nod "yes" you've ever seen. And though she's just one, she's often seen right along side her big sisters...unless she wants her mom or dad. Then, there's no convincing her that anything else is better. (Yeah, she's got a stubborn streak too). But see why she's our sweet big girl? She loves her Mommy and Daddy. And we think that's a special thing.
